Full Bill

WHEREAS, William Penn High School’s Girls Track Team has been nationally ranked since 1981; and

WHEREAS, For fourteen consecutive years William Penn High School’s Girls Track Team has won the State Indoor Track Championship; and

WHEREAS, The last two years William Penn High School placed fourth and second to North Philadelphia rival Simon Gratz High School and this year William Penn won the State Indoor Track Championships with outstanding individual and team accomplishments; and

WHEREAS, The members of the team consist of Laquisha Anthony, Juanita Broaddus, Jetta Frisby, Jessica Fulton, Gorgeous Harper, Ashley Holiday, Mary McAliley, Madonna Patterson, Tiffany Poole, Dionne Showell, Christina Smith, Tiffany Smith, Tasha Staten, Tyeshia Thomas, and Jasmine Tucker; and

WHEREAS, Ms. Tasha Staten was named Most Valuable Athlete and ran a State Meet Record in the 200 Meter Dash with a time of twenty four seconds and four-tenths of a second (24.40), tied a meet record in the 400 Meter Dash with a time of fifty four and four tenths seconds (54.04), and anchored the 4 x 200 meter relay team that set a new state meet record time of 1 minute and 41 seconds (1.41); and

WHEREAS, The William Penn High School’s Girls Track Team set a new state record of three minutes and fifty one seconds (3.51) in the Mile Relay (4 x 400) with team members Gorgeous Harper, Madonna Patterson, Christina Smith and Tyeshia Thomas; and

WHEREAS, Team member Ashley Holiday won the Princeton Relays in the Long Jump Competition with a winning jump of Eighteen Feet, Two and one quarter inches (18’ 2 ¼”); and

WHEREAS, Team members Laquisha Anthony, Madonna Patterson, Tiffany Smith, and Tyeisha Thomas won the 4 x 800 meter relay at the Meet of Champion held at Lehigh University; and

WHEREAS, Team member Tyeshia Thomas won the 60 meter hurdles at that same meet; now therefore

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That we extend our heartfelt congratulations to William Penn High School Girls Track Team in winning the Indoor State Championship and years of outstanding excellence in Track and Field.
