Working women comprise nearly half of the U.S. labor force with over 61 million women in the workplace; and
WHEREAS

Women in the workforce face added burdens caused by the demands of balancing family life with full-time jobs. Demands including child rearing and caring for dependent adults; and
WHEREAS

Not all women in the workforce have equal pay and advancement opportunities, they face employment discrimination, have fewer health care benefits, and endure social security and pension inequities; and
WHEREAS
,
Government, business and labor leaders should make efforts to find solutions to the special problems working women face; and
WHEREAS
,
Women deserve recognition for the important contributions they make in their workplaces and communities and it is necessary to increase public awareness of those contributions; now therefore
RESOLVED, THAT THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, Declares the week of May 14,
2000 as Working Women's Awareness Week.
