Brian J. O'NeillWHEREAS, The National High School Chess Championship tournament this year was the largest High School Chess Championship ever held. Every spring, players from across the nation converge on a selected host city to participate in a three-day tournament of mental agility and stamina. This year, the event was hosted in Charlotte, North Carolina and included, 1,395 players from 32 states representing 185 schools; and
WHEREAS, Through the various accomplishments that have been achieved by Masterman School and by placing first in the national chess tournament, Masterman School has once again exhibited the intelligence and talent that are not only responsible for making Masterman School among the elite magnet schools in Philadelphia, but also one of the premier educational institutions in the nation; and
WHEREAS, For eight consecutive years, Masterman School's High School Chess Team has placed among the top three teams, and has received first place distinction in four out of the last five years among high school chess teams that compete in the tournament; and
WHEREAS, The talented participants who secured the win for Masterman School include: Scott Middleman, Andrew Read, Roman Reznik, and Stan Ritvin, who himself placed third in the individual competition as well. Also on the team were: Caitlin Coslett, Luke Donahue, David Friedell, and Jonathan Levy. Also, this talented team was led to victory by its successful and very dedicated coach, Steve Shutt; now therefore
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That we hereby honor and congratulate the Julia R. Masterman School for placing first in the 2000 United States Chess Federation (USCF) National Scholastic High School Chess Championship.
FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to the Julia R. Masterman School as evidence of the sincere admiration of this legislative body.
