WHEREAS, On June 25, 1950 the army of Communist North Korea smashed across the 38th parallel of latitude in an invasion of the Republic of South Korea; and
WHEREAS, Within days of the invasion the United Nations Security Council called for a cease fire and urged members to assist South Korea in repelling its invaders; and
WHEREAS, On July 8, 1950 President Truman named General Douglas MacArthur commander of United Nations forces in Korea; and
WHEREAS, On September 24 through the 28, 1950 United Nations forces regained control of Seoul, South Korea; and
WHEREAS, On October 1, 1950 the South Koreans pushed across the 38th parallel eventually capturing the North Korean capitol with assistance of the U.S., British and Australian Forces; and
WHEREAS, General MacArthur was relieved of his duties on March 24, 1951 and replaced with Lieutenant General James A. Van Fleet; and
WHEREAS, Between March 1951 and July 1953 negotiations for a truce and armistice occurred on several occasions; and
WHEREAS, An armistice was signed at Panmunjom at 10:01 AM after three years, and 32 days of conflict; and
WHEREAS, Many Americans lost there lives in the Korean War and as many as 900 Americans were held captive and never returned; now therefore
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That we recognize the 50th Anniversary of the Korean War and that we recognize the efforts of the many Philadelphians who served in Korea; and
FURTHER RESOLVED, That we recognize and commend the role of Corporal William McAllister Chapter 1509 and PFC Stanley Gogoj Chapter 38 of the Korean War Veterans of America for their service to Philadelphia and our veterans.
