Recognizing and celebrating the 10th Anniversary of the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

WHEREAS, Children and adults with disabilities are participating as full members of their communities in greater and greater numbers; and

WHEREAS, More and more children with disabilities are successfully integrated into their neighborhood schools; and

WHEREAS, More and more children and adults with disabilities are playing, worshipping, working and shopping along side their neighbors; and

WHEREAS, More and more communities are becoming inclusive and free of physical and social barriers; and

WHEREAS, The year 2000 is the 10th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the 25th Anniversary of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA); and

WHEREAS, Through the enactment and implementation of these federal civil rights laws, America can live up to and fulfill the promise of liberty and justice for all; now therefore

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That we hereby recognize and celebrate

the 10th Anniversary of the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to Liberty Resources, Inc., Initiative 2000, and the Pennsylvania Transportation Alliance as evidence of the sincere admiration and gratitude of this legislative body for all of their efforts on behalf of people with disabilities. We also call to action individuals, communities, service and advocacy organizations within our city to organize activities, programs, and resources to promote full citizenship for people with disabilities. We encourage all citizens to work together and alongside others across our nation to promote equality of opportunity, full participation, independent living and economic self-sufficiency for all people.
