WHEREAS, Mr. Juan Santiago, born and raised in the City of Philadelphia has spent a significant part of his life volunteering his personal time and expertise to the development of productive youth development activities; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Santiago is recognized in the Latino community for his unmatched devotion to the utilization of sports as a means of fostering healthy minds, discipline and team skills among youth and people of all ages; and
WHEREAS, In January of 2000 “La Liga Del Barrio” (The Neighborhood League) was co-founded by the 76er’s organization and the Office of City Councilman Angel L. Ortiz. “La Liga” is a youth basketball league composed of 28 teams, boys and girls ages 6-16;
and
WHEREAS, Since the league’s inception, Mr. Santiago has been a driving force serving as the organization’s mentor and coordinator of the league’s activities. “Johnny” has been a driving force ensuring the leagues growth and overall success; and
WHEREAS, With the support of volunteers, parents and corporate sponsors, as Motrin and Old Navy, the by-product of Mr. Santiago’s labor is evidenced by the league’s recent achievements. “La Liga Del Barrio” has earned membership in the Junior NBA/WNBA and it was chosen as a key participant in the February 2002 All-Star Weekend Jam Session Program. Further, one of the League’s players was awarded an Honorable Mention to the National All-Star Junior NBA/WNBA; and
WHEREAS, The leagues upcoming championship game will be hosted by the 76ers’ organization at the First Union Center on February 18, 2002; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Juan Santiago has served as an exemplary role model and inspiration to all those who seek excellence while serving the larger interests of the Philadelphia community; now, therefore
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That we hereby recognize Mr. Juan “Johnny” Santiago for his dedication to the successful development of the “Liga del Barrio” Basketball League and his contributions to the overall quality of life of our City.
FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to Mr. Juan “Johnny” Santiago as evidence if the sincere respect and admiration of this legislative body.
