WHEREAS, In 1772, Dr. John Kearsley founded the nation's first retirement community which was known as Christ Church Hospital and was located at 308 Cherry Street; and
WHEREAS, In 1861, the facility moved into a new magnificent stone building in the Wynnefield section of Philadelphia where it remains to this day providing a continuum of care for senior citizens which includes independent living, personal care and nursing home care; and
WHEREAS, Since 1772, Kearsley's mission has been to provide dignified housing, exceptional health care and essential services to low-income older people; and
WHEREAS, The Kearsley Retirement Community is considered a national model of a continuum of care for low-income older adults; and
WHEREAS, The Kearsley tradition of progressive housing and health care services for older adults combined with its beautifully maintained campus has been a tremendous asset to the Wynnefield community and the City of Philadelphia for four centuries; now therefore
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That the part of Monument Road from Wynnefield Avenue to North 49th Street shall also be known as "Kearsley Road."
