WHEREAS, In February, 2002, a dream became a reality with the opening of an institution developed to showcase the history of beauty culture throughout civilization; and
WHEREAS, The Philadelphia Beauty Showcase National Historic Museum tells the story of America's Hair and Beauty Industry, but it also traces beauty culture all the way back to the Middle Ages when monks and priests, the most learned people of the times, employed barbers as their assistants. Later, barbers took over where the clergy left off, and since that time, the business and culture of beauty has been growing and expanding; and
WHEREAS, The Museum is located in the heart of West Philadelphia, in the bustling 500 block of South 52nd Street. The Board and staff are dedicated to revitalizing the area, increasing tourism for the community and City, and making West Philadelphia even more inviting for those who live and work there; and
WHEREAS, In addition to the Museum itself, the founders have instituted an education component which will provide activities, projects, programs and travel for students and their families; and
WHEREAS, We also recognize at this time Paul Randleman and Shirley Randleman, who as founders and officers, have been the driving force behind the Museum and a terrific force for good in West Philadelphia; now therefore
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That we hereby recognize and commend all those involved with the establishment and operation of the Philadelphia Beauty Showcase National Historical Museum.
FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to President & Founder, Paul L. Randleman and Vice President, Shirley Randleman as evidence of the respect, admiration and very best wishes of this legislative body.
