WHEREAS,

The News Gleaner

, which was originally known as the “

Frankford News Gleaner

,” was founded in 1882 by George W. Henry and served mostly an industrial and manufacturing community; and

WHEREAS, As the population of Northeast Philadelphia grew,

The News Gleaner

followed, expanding from its’ roots in Frankford to the outer reaches of Somerton and Fox Chase, which is how the paper’s boundaries are defined today; and

WHEREAS, “

The Gleaner

” as it is affectionately known to legions of readers, was owned and operated by four generations of the Henry family, with George W., T.P. Coulston, Coulston Rodman, and Coulston S. all heading the paper over the last 120 years; and

WHEREAS, In March 2002, the paper was purchased by the Journal Register Company of Trenton, New Jersey; and

WHEREAS,

The Gleaner

consists of eight free weekly newspapers that serve the communities comprising the Great Northeast. Six separate editions serve these neighborhoods, utilizing a Wednesday-Thursday delivery schedule; and

WHEREAS, In the early 1990’s,

The Gleaner

further bolstered its’ reputation as one of the leading weekly papers in the city, purchasing both the

Northeast Breeze

and the

Olney Times

; and

WHEREAS, Total circulation of

The News Gleaner

family is well in excess of 125,000 and continues to serve loyal communities diverse in ethnicity and culture; and

WHEREAS, The paper employs top-notch staffers that continue to give the paper that “family feel” every week, lead by Editor Don Brennan and staff writers Dave Foster and Nicole Clark; now therefore

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That we hereby honor and commend

The News Gleaner

on the occasion of its’ 120th Anniversary.

FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to representatives of

The News Gleaner

as evidence of the sincere appreciation of this legislative body.
