Honoring and recognizing the United Negro College Fund for its contributions to American society and education of America's youth.

WHEREAS, The United Negro College Fund was founded by Dr. Frederick D. Patterson, President of Tuskegee Institute, now Tuskegee University; and

WHEREAS, The United Negro College Fund was incorporated on April 25,

1944 with twenty seven member colleges; and

WHEREAS, The United Negro College Fund is the nation’s oldest and most successful African American higher education assistance organization; and

WHEREAS, It is the mission of the United Negro College Fund to enhance the quality of education by raising operating funds for its thirty-nine member colleges and universities; and

WHEREAS, The United Negro College Fund provides financial assistance to deserving students at historically black colleges and universities; and

WHEREAS, The United Negro College Fund maintains its commitment to providing educational opportunity with a low cost ratio to high achieving African American, Hispanic American, Native American and Asian Pacific American students; and

WHEREAS, The United Negro College Fund supports nearly 65,000 students at 950 colleges and universities; and

WHEREAS, Prominent United Negro College Fund Alumni include, but not limited to: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Nobel Peace Winner; Dr. Louis Sullivan, former Secretary, U.S. Department of Heath and Human Services; John Chaney, Temple University Men’s Head Basketball Coach and other prominent Philadelphia citizens; now therefore

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That on this day, February 13, 2003, we hereby recognize the United Negro College Fund and acknowledge its outstanding work and contributions to the City of Philadelphia.

FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to representatives of the United Negro College Fund as an expression of the gratitude and sincere respect of this legislative body.
