Full Bill

WHEREAS, Greater Philadelphia Cares will host National Youth Service Day 2005 for the Greater Philadelphia Region; and

WHEREAS, National Youth Service Day, the largest service event in the world, mobilizes youth to identify and address the needs of their communities through service, recruits the next generation of volunteers, and educates the public about the year round contributions of young people as community leaders; and

WHEREAS, On National Youth Service Day, a public awareness and education campaign that highlights the amazing contributions that young people make to their communities 365 days a year, young people will design and lead service-learning projects in areas ranging from literacy and the environment, to healthcare, hunger, and help for the elderly; and

WHEREAS, Greater Philadelphia Cares’ mission is to support the creation of vibrant communities by motivating people to volunteer their time, talents, and resources. They provide a clear path to service for all, enhancing the impact of non-profit agencies throughout the Greater Philadelphia Region; and

WHEREAS, Greater Philadelphia Cares strives to equip volunteers with greater awareness of critical needs in the Greater Philadelphia Region and our world and increase their capacity to do more as volunteers; and

WHEREAS, In coalition with youth leaders and youth service workers, Greater Philadelphia Cares is developing projects based in the following categories: Community Development/Anti-blight Initiatives, Homelessness and Hunger, Environment, Education/literacy, Seniors, people with disabilities, people with AIDS/HIV, and animals; now therefore

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That April 15-17th 2005 be recognized as National Youth Service Day in Philadelphia; and

FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to Greater Philadelphia Cares.
