WHEREAS, Ella's House of Beauty, owned and operated by Ella Brown, opened its doors in 1951, in the Northwest Section of the City at 1800 N. 22nd Street; and
WHEREAS, In 1951 at the age of 21, Ella rented the storefront at 2211 Montgomery Avenue and began performing hair care. She named the shop, Ella's House of Beauty; and
WHEREAS, During the 50 plus years Mrs. Brown has operated her business, she has always done her best to support the residents of her community; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Ella Brown was so concerned for those in her community that faced difficult circumstances, she often gave food and monetary donations; and
WHEREAS, Because of Mrs. Brown's passion for the community and its residents, she was never once robbed; and
WHEREAS, Her store survived throughout the turbulent times of the race riots after Dr. Martin Luther King's assassination, the Sixties and its drug addiction impact on the community, the economic downturn of the Seventies, and the crack epidemics of the Eighties and Nineties that also greatly affected businesses; and
WHEREAS, Despite the numerous tragedies and events that have plagued her immediate family, Mrs. Brown can still be found operating Ella's House of Beauty; now therefore
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, Recognizing Mrs. Ella Brown as an outstanding business owner in the City of Philadelphia for 54 years and counting; and
FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to Mrs. Ella Brown as evidence of the sincere sentiments of this legislative body.
