Recognizing Coach John Chaney for his retirement from 24 seasons at Temple University.

WHEREAS, John Chaney, a native of Jacksonville, FL, has patrolled the sidelines for Cheney State University and Temple University for over 30 years. In that time, he has won more than 700 games and led his teams to 30 post season berths; and

WHEREAS, John Chaney began his collegiate coaching career at Cheney State University where he led his team to the 1978 Division II National Championship; and

WHEREAS, For his efforts, he was named the Division II National Coach of the Year; and

WHEREAS, In 10 years at Cheney State, he led his teams to eight NCAA Division II Tournament appearances and a third place finish in 1979; and

WHEREAS, John Chaney arrived at Temple University before the 1982-83 season; and

WHEREAS, Coach Chaney guided Temple to 17 NCAA Tournament appearances, including five NCAA regional finals; and

WHEREAS, He was twice named national coach of the year and entered the Hall of Fame in 2001; and

WHEREAS, Chaney has 741 wins as a college coach, including a 516-252 record at Temple, where he won seven Atlantic 10 Conference Titles; and

WHEREAS, Only Bob Knight, Eddie Sutton, Lute Olson, and Mike Krzyzewski are the active coaches with more career victories; and

WHEREAS, He is the coach with the most wins in Atlantic 10 history with 284 wins. He has compiled 15 20-win seasons at Temple University; and

WHEREAS, Coach Chaney annually loaded his schedule with the top teams of the nation in order to prepare his teams for the NCAA tournament; and

WHEREAS, He was not only a coach but a father figure to many of his players who were given a chance at an education; now therefore

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That Coach John Chaney be recognized for his years of service to Temple University, and the youth of his teams over 24 seasons; and

FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to Coach John Chaney as evidence of the sincere sentiments of this legislative body.
