The Council of the City of Philadelphia is pleased and proud to join with the family, friends and colleagues of George J. Hollingsworth, Building Services Manager for the City of Philadelphia, Department of Public Property, in celebrating and honoring him on twenty-nine years of outstanding service to the citizens of the City of Philadelphia.

WHEREAS, George Hollingsworth, a lifelong resident of Philadelphia, was born on November 25, 1943 to Joseph and Rose Hollingsworth. Along with his two sisters, Midi and Roe, and two brothers, Joey and Bill, George was proudly raised in West Philadelphia, receiving his education at Saint Agatha’s and St. Thomas More. Twenty- three years ago, George was united in marriage to Betty and they were blessed with one daughter, Danielle, and a grandson, Christian; and

WHEREAS, George Hollingsworth began his career with the City of Philadelphia on December 5, 1977, when he was hired as a skilled Carpenter in the Department of Public Property. George excelled at his work from the beginning, receiving a steady stream of promotions to supervisory positions. On December 1, 1997, he was promoted to Acting Building Services Manager. His competent and diligent work and his supervisory abilities soon earned him his present permanent position as Building Services Manager, on May 4, 1998; and

WHEREAS, George Hollingsworth’s career with the City has been consistently marked by significant achievement. He has established a firm reputation among his fellow employees and City officials as a competent and conscientious worker. His hands have touched every Council office, in a variety of ways, from hanging a picture to building a wall. For each inauguration, George moved the antique Council desks down Broad Street with care, and returned them safely to the Chambers. His fine work was also evident in numerous memorable Philadelphia events, including the Presidential Summit in 1997, the Republican National Convention in 2000, Live 8 in 2005, and many successful Welcome America celebrations. His commendations, too numerous to mention, include being cited by this Council for his excellent work in repairing the damage from the major City Hall flood of 2002. A sampling of the diverse organizations and individuals who have recognized his work includes the Susan B. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, St. Patrick’s Day Observance Committee, Italian Market Festival, Sunoco Welcome America, Philadelphia Charity Ball, Cardinal Justin Regali, and WPVI 6 ABC. He also received the Ron Rovins Memorial Award for the Broad Street Run and the Visionary Award From Mothers United Through Tragedy; now therefore

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELHIA, That we hereby honor and commend George J. Hollingsworth on twenty-nine years of outstanding service to the citizens of Philadelphia. We extend our sincere appreciation for his many accomplishments and gratefully note the positive impact his work has brought to City government and to millions of people visiting Philadelphia. We will miss the sound of him whistling in the corridors of City Hall!

FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to George J. Hollingsworth as evidence of the sincere sentiments of this legislative body.
