Full Bill

WHEREAS, Excessive weight in children is causing weight-related diseases to skyrocket, with

childhood excess weight's having been tied to life-long health problems and even shorter lives; and

WHEREAS, SHAPING AMERICA'S Youth’s Town Meeting is a public/private initiative, designed to combine the efforts of numerous organizations and programs to create a "grassroots" plan for healthier nutrition and activity for children; and

WHEREAS, This free public event has provided opportunities to over 1000 citizens of diverse backgrounds to come together and have input about solving the childhood obesity problem, as well as encouraging our young people to have healthy eating habits and regular physical exercise; and

WHEREAS, The Town Meeting is the third in a national series of such Town Meetings to gather input from experts, teens, parents, teachers, and other members of the community; and

WHEREAS, Fifty experienced professionals are serving as facilitators for the day-long "conversation" discussing challenges and solutions to important health issues with our children; and

WHEREAS, A number of civic-minded sponsors, including SAY's corporate partners Nike, Campbell Soup Company, Academic Network, Cadbury Schweppes, CIGNA Health, ConAgra Foods, Pfizer Health Solutions and Glaxo SmithKline, have made it possible to offer this important free event to the community; and

WHEREAS, On Saturday, April 21st, the SHAPING AMERICA'S YOUTH Town Meeting will harness technology in order to share information gained instantly and provide each participant with a report of the proceedings by the end of the day; now therefore

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA,

hat we hereby honor SHAPING AMERICA'S YOUTH ® for choosing Philadelphia for the third national Town Meeting, devoted to finding solutions to the problem of childhood obesity and lack of exercise.

FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to David McCarron, M.D., founder and executive director of SHAPING AMERICA'S YOUTH ®, as evidence of sincere sentiments of this legislative body.
