Honoring the Philadelphia Eagles' Go Green Campaign whose mission is to create and sustain championship performance on the field and in the community through programs that promote environmental awareness and sustainability.

WHEREAS, The Philadelphia Eagles was the first team in professional sports to adopt responsibility for the environment and its role in the community through its “Go Green” Campaign; and

WHEREAS, Launched in 2003, the Go Green Campaign focuses on incorporating green initiatives, sustainable business practices and educational programs as their core operating principals; and

WHEREAS, The Go Green Campaign involves recycling, using renewable energy resources, neutralizing carbon output, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and tree planting; and

WHEREAS, The Philadelphia Eagles were involved in the revitalization of Franklin Square at 6th and Race Streets in Philadelphia. The campaign contributed to greening the park by planting 153 shrubs, 34 large trees and 27 small trees. Christina Weiss Lurie, owner of the Philadelphia Eagles and president of Eagles Youth Partnership commented about the project, “Franklin Square will emerge as an attractive green space for all to enjoy and we are proud to facilitate the continued revitalization of Philadelphia’s Historic District through Go Green”; and

WHEREAS, The Go Green Campaign also offers a wind reimbursement program to Eagles employees who purchase wind energy through the PECO Wind and New Jersey Clean Power Energy programs. Go Green says the CO2 reductions of one person participating are equivalent to planting 268 trees every year or not driving 3,600 miles. In addition, the Eagles have purchased enough blocks of wind energy to be equivalent to powering every 2007 season home game completely on wind; and

WHEREAS, The Philadelphia Eagles have also joined with TreeVitalize to plant hundreds of trees at elementary schools and parks around Philadelphia. Christina Weiss Lurie said of the partnership, “We are focusing our tree-planting at schools because we understand the relationship between healthy children and a healthy environment”; and

WHEREAS, The Philadelphia Eagles played in a Carbon Neutral Game against the St. Louis Rams in December 2005. Energy to heat the dome and power lights and equipment was replaced with clean energy from a Native American wind project in the Midwest and energy from a Pennsylvania dairy farm methane project; and

WHEREAS, Philadelphia is proud to have the first environmentally focused professional sports team who is dedicated to improving the environmental quality of life in the City through sustainable initiatives; now therefore

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That Council does hereby honor the Philadelphia Eagles’ Go Green Campaign whose mission is to create and sustain championship performance on the field and in the community through programs that promote environmental awareness and sustainability.

FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to Christina Weiss Lurie and Jeffrey Lurie, owners of the Philadelphia Eagles, as evidence of the sincere sentiments and recognition of this legislative body.
