Honoring Timothy R. Lannon, S.J., President Saint Joseph's University on his vision and leadership of Saint Joseph's University in making an unalterable contribution to the City of Philadelphia, and the residents of the immediate West Philadelphia neighborhood surrounding Saint Joseph's.

WHEREAS, Father Timothy R. Lannon, S.J., is the twenty-sixth President of Saint Joseph’s University, and he is in his fifth year as President of Saint Joseph’s University; and

WHEREAS, Under Father Timothy R. Lannon's stewardship, St. Joseph’s University has made an indelible commitment to Philadelphia and the immediate neighborhood surrounding its campus; and

WHEREAS,

Saint Joseph's was named to the 2006 President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll with Distinction for General Community Service; and

WHEREAS, Father Timothy R. Lannon,S.J., the consummate standard bearer of the

Jesuit tradition of scholarship and service, and

Saint Joseph's University is proud to offer an open campus in metropolitan West Philadelphia that benefits and service the needs of this community; and

WHEREAS, Father Timothy R. Lannon, S.J., under his stewardship, oversees many programs designed by St. Joseph’s University, to enhance the minority population in higher education and West Philadelphia bright and gifted minority students are the beneficiaries of these programs; and

WHEREAS, Pathways to Careers in Mathematics and Computer Science (PACMACS) program provides local, academically talented minority public high school students study at the college level; and

WHEREAS, the Community Scholars Program offers classes in the evening and weekends to highly motivated minority high school students; and

WHEREAS, the Summer Bridge Program is for diverse middle-school children in West Philadelphia to begin early becoming acclimated to higher education and experiencing academic challenge in a university setting; and

WHEREAS, The Lenfest Scholars Program provides for full college tuition to minority students who are identified as being academically talented in the sixth grade upon graduation from high school; and

WHEREAS, Father Timothy R. Lannon, S.J.,

works closely with community leaders in the local neighborhoods and the Philadelphia region to ensure a good quality of life for our area; and

WHEREAS,

Father Timothy R. Lannon, S.J., has worked tirelessly to re-engage the University in its mission,

to improve the common good by utilizing their skills and knowledge to promote tolerance, compassion and social justice,

and to foster expanded outreach efforts to alumni, governmental leaders, and other external constituencies. In the latter role, he serves as chair of the City Avenue Special Services District (CASSD); and

WHEREAS, As a central tenet of his leadership, Father Timothy R. Lannon, S.J., has articulated a vision for Saint Joseph's University to be recognized as one of the pre-eminent comprehensive universities in the Northeast; and

WHEREAS, Father Timothy R. Lannon, S.J., has led many significant University initiatives, most notably the agreement to purchase the 38-acre campus of the neighboring Episcopal Academy; and

WHEREAS, Father Timothy R. Lannon, S.J., has played a major role in boosting Saint Joseph's academic profile, an effort which includes recently endowed faculty chairs and student scholarships as well as the opening of the Pedro Arrupe Center for Business Ethics, to further strengthen the University's academic position; now therefore

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL FOR THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That we hereby honor and commend Timothy R. Lannon, S.J., President Saint Joseph’s University on his vision and leadership of Saint Joseph’s University in making an unalterable contribution to the City of Philadelphia, and the residents of the immediate West Philadelphia neighborhood surrounding Saint Joseph’s.

FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to Father Timothy R. Lannon, S.J., as evidence of the sincere sentiments of this legislative body.
