Honoring and Commending the legendary songwriting and production team Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff on their induction into the 2008 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

WHEREAS,

Mr. Kenneth Gamble and Mr. Leon Huff are credited with creating a musical legacy that has brought fame and pride to the City of Philadelphia through entertaining audiences world-wide and spreading the Philadelphia Sound; and

WHEREAS,

Having one of the most sought after pop and soul catalogs in the world with instantly recognizable tunes and influential lyrics, they serve as favorites to advertising agencies, music production houses, commercials, motion pictures and television sitcoms; and

WHEREAS,

The Grammy-winning, multi-platinum selling duo are responsible for one of the most recognizable and influential catalogs of pop and soul music ever recorded; and

WHEREAS,

Producing 70 # 1 Pop and R&B singles, 175 Gold, Platinum, and Multi-Platinum certifications, 5 Grammy’s including the Recording Academy’s Trustees Award and more than 3,500 songs to date; and

WHEREAS

, Through the creation of their label, Philadelphia International Records, they have amassed chart topping sales records and developed a significant amount of talent which includes Patti LaBelle, The O’Jays, Teddy Pendergrass, Harold Melvin and The Blue Notes just to name a few; and

WHEREAS,

Their musical career continues across the United States and abroad, as several of today’s top artist sample or re-create new renditions from the Gamble & Huff catalogue; and

WHEREAS,

The Gamble & Huff signature sound is internationally recognized as “ The Sound of Philadelphia,” with a Gamble & Huff song being played somewhere in the world every 13.5 minutes; and

WHEREAS,

It is the intent, that from this resolution Philadelphia will have undoubtedly acknowledged the achievements and contributions to this important musical duo; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE CITY OF COUNCIL OF PHILADELPHIA,

That we hereby honor and commend the legendary songwriting and production team Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff on their induction into the 2008 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to Mr. Kenneth Gamble and Mr. Leon Huff as evidence of the sincere sentiments of this legislative body.
