Recognizing novelist Ken Bruen as the first Recipient of the David L. Goodis Award.

WHEREAS, Ken Bruen was born in Galway, Ireland on January 3, 1951, and educated at Saint Joseph's College in Galway City and received his Ph.D. in Metaphysics from Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland; and

WHEREAS, Ken Bruen has established himself as one of the leading Irish writers of Noir fiction and international bestsellers; and

WHEREAS, Ken Bruen has been a finalist for the Edgar, Anthony, and Barry Awards, and has won the Macavity Award; and

WHEREAS, Ken Bruen has been presented with the Shamus Award for the Best Novel of 2003 for

The Guards

by The Private Eye Writers of America: and

WHEREAS, Ken Bruen has

received the best series award in February 2007 for the Jack Taylor novels from The Crime Writers Association of America; and

WHEREAS, Ken Bruen has spent

25 years as an English teacher in Africa, Japan, Southeast Asia, and South America; and

WHEREAS, Ken Bruen has acted in Roger Corman films in addition to a stint as an security guard on the 107th floor of the World Trade Building; and

WHEREAS, Ken Bruen will be presented with the first David L. Goodis Award at NoirCon on April 4, 2008, in recognition for his contributions to Noir literature in the spirit of Philadelphia's native son, David L. Goodis; now therefore, be it

RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA that we hereby salute Ken Bruen on his achievements and contributions to the field of Noir writing.

FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to Ken Bruen as evidence of the sincere respect and appreciation of this legislative body.
