Full Bill

WHEREAS

, Police Officer Charles Cassidy was appointed to the Philadelphia Police Department on March 1, 1982; and

WHEREAS

, On December 24, 1996, Officer Cassidy was assigned to the 35th Police District where he served as a member of the 5 Squad; and

WHEREAS

, On October 31, 2007, Officer Cassidy was checking on a store at the corner of 66th Avenue and Broad Street that had been robbed previously. Unknown to Officer Cassidy, there was a robbery in progress in the store. As Officer Cassidy entered, the suspect turned and fired, hitting Officer Cassidy in the head; and

WHEREAS

, Officer Cassidy was transported to Albert Einstein Medical Center, where he remained until succumbing to the gunshot wound on November 1, 2007; and

WHEREAS

, The suspect was arrested in Florida by members of the Miami Police Department on November 6, 2007 and presently awaits trial; and

.

WHEREAS

, Officer Cassidy died at the age of 54, having served in the Philadelphia Police Department for 25 years; and

WHEREAS

, Officer Cassidy resided at 2736 Willits Road; and

WHEREAS

, Officer Cassidy is survived by his wife, Judith, his three children Katie, Nicole and John; and

WHEREAS

, In recognition of the dedicated service by Police Officer Charles Cassidy and to further memorialize the sacrifice he made by serving and protecting the citizens of Philadelphia; now therefore

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA

, That we honor the life and service of this dedicated public servant by also naming the 2700 block of Willits Road and the streets at the intersection of 66th Avenue and North Broad Street in honor of Police Officer Charles Cassidy, Badge No. 2342.
