Full Bill

WHEREAS, Jill Scott was born and raised by her Mother and Grandmother in North Philadelphia and attended Philadelphia High School for Girls and Temple University; and

WHEREAS, Jill Scott has been recognized as a uniquely talented singer, songwriter, poet, and actress, achieving Platinum status with her debut album “

Who is Jill Scott? Words and Sounds Vol. 1

” which was the recipient of three NAACP Image Awards and one Soul Train Award for Best Female R&B Album; and

WHEREAS, Jill Scott is currently starring in the HBO series,

The Number One Ladies Detective Agency,

playing

Precious Ramotswe, the owner of the only female-operated detective agency in Botswana, who weekly solves mysteries ranging from child kidnapping, poverty, organized crime, health crises, spousal abandonment and infidelity; and

WHEREAS, Jill Scott was the 2001 recipient of the Aretha Franklin Award, as the “Entertainer of the Year” award at the Lady Soul Awards, and won a Grammy in 2005 for Best Urban/Alternative R&B performance for

“Cross My Mind”

; and

WHEREAS, Jill Scott founded the Blues Babe Foundation in 2002, named after her grandmother, an organization that provides scholarships to minority college-bound students in the Philadelphia area; and

WHEREAS, In 2006, the Blues Babe Foundation donated over $100,000 for the renovation of the Cecil B. Moore Recreation Center, which was one of several recreation centers scheduled for closure at the time due to poor conditions and limited use. The center now serves as a model for community renewal due to the Jill Scott's commitment to the neighborhood where she grew up; now therefore

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA

That it hereby recognizes, honors and celebrates the accomplishments of Jill Scott for her commitment to the City of Philadelphia.

FURTHER RESOLVED,

That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to Jill Scott as evidence of the sincere sentiments of this legislative body.
