WHEREAS,
Mom & Pop stores are small, independent retailers of all types of products and services that we use every day and are usually owned and operated by local families; and,
WHEREAS,
In addition to the convenience that neighborhood Mom & Pop stores provide, they also serve as a touchstone to the community, often taking on the roles of bulletin board, backyard fence and gathering space; and,
WHEREAS,
Mom & Pop stores, and other small businesses, are often considered to be the backbone of our economy, providing jobs, revenues and investment in neighborhoods; and,
WHEREAS,
Mom & Pop stores are threatened by the national economic down turn as well as the buying power of national retail chains; now, therefore be it
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA,
That the week of September 14, 2009 shall be designated as Mom and Pop Store Week.
