Full Bill

WHEREAS, On March 11, 1910, Mrs. Mary Church Terrell, Dr. Sara Brown, Dr. Fairfax Brown, and Ms. Mary Cromwell gathered in Washington, D.C. to plan a program that would enable them to develop a close relationship with other professional women; and

WHEREAS, They formed the College Alumnae Club which influenced various civic causes and social movements in the city and, by 1919, other college graduates that lived outside Washington, D.C. were invited to join the founding group; and

WHEREAS, By 1923, the Club had numerous college graduates in newly organized branches throughout the United States and these branches were incorporated as a national organization entitled the National Association of College Women; and

WHEREAS, The Philadelphia Branch was chartered in 1954 and during the 1974 biennial convention in Philadelphia, the charter was updated and the organization was renamed as the National Association of University Women and, today, it continues to stay true to its mission as a service and educational organization with branches throughout our nation; and

WHEREAS, The goals of the National Association of University Women are to sponsor, promote, and conduct educational activities to provide community outreach services, to network with educational institutions, agencies, and other organizations for the purpose of improving educational standards and promoting academic and intellectual attainment, to sponsor conferences, seminars, and workshops for the purpose of achieving its programs, to promote the improvement of education and to address issues that involve the quality of education, and to sponsor awards, scholarships, and fellowships for undergraduate and graduate study on the local, sectional, and national levels; and

WHEREAS, This March, the Philadelphia Branch, under the leadership of Ann Glover-Lingham, along with the Suburban Philadelphia and Wilmington Branches, are holding a tri-branch event to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the National Association of University Women and this event will feature National President Mrs. Ollie D. Johnson and Northeast Sectional Director Mrs. Pauline Chandler and will provide an opportunity to reflect upon the organization's founders and 100 years of outreach and service to the communities of our nation; therefore, be it,

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That we hereby honor the National Association of University Women on its 100th Anniversary.

FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to representatives of The National Association of University Women as evidence of the sincere sentiments of this legislative body.
