WHEREAS, Born in Philadelphia in 1943, Mr. William J. Glatz, Jr. was a beloved business owner and fixture of the community who operated William Glatz Jewelers on Rising Sun Avenue for 35 years; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Glatz was a graduate of Frankford High School (Class of 1961), was the devoted husband of Donna M. McGee Glatz for 48 years, and was the son of the late Anne Rosskothen Glatz and William J. Glatz, Sr.; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Glatz followed in his father's footsteps and maintained the family jewelry store on Rising Sun Avenue where he gave his heart and soul to keep the Avenue and the neighborhood thriving; and
WHEREAS, He was a pillar of the community who was good, generous, and loved by all and admired by his colleagues and, when he opened a second store in Jamison, PA, he stayed at his father's store while his wife operated the new location; and
WHEREAS, On Thursday, October 21, 2010, Mr. Glatz died tragically, while protecting his employees, during an attempted robbery of his jewelry store; and
WHEREAS, He was survived by his beloved wife, Donna, his son and daughter in law, Robert and Cathie Glatz, his daughter and son in law, Cheryl and Thomas Garr, his sister, Joanne Proschinger, and his two loving grandchildren, Collin and Jessica Garr. Therefore, be it,
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That we hereby honor Mr. William J. Glatz, Jr. by naming the 6400 block of Rising Sun Avenue as William J. Glatz, Jr. Way.
FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to members of the Glatz family as evidence of the sincere sentiments of this legislative body.
