Full Bill

WHEREAS, Philadelphia has a rich and dedicated network of non-corporate, home-grown media; and

WHEREAS, An uncompromised press is invaluable to a free and democratic society; and

WHEREAS, These local news outlets serve our community with a special excellence and commitment; and

WHEREAS, Media mergers, corporate ownership and budget cuts threaten the integrity of local news coverage; and

WHEREAS, Local independent media outlets

build the public consensus needed to bring about change; and

WHEREAS, Free and independent media should be recognized as a key dimension of efforts to eradicate poverty, advocating for basic human rights, a stronger civil society, political transparency, support to education and sustainable livelihoods; now, therefore be it

RESOLVED, THAT THE PHILADELPHIA CITY COUNCIL, Hereby

declares June 2012 as Local Independent Media Month and recognizes

FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to the Americans for Democratic Action on behalf of all local independent media outlets as profound expression of this Council's appreciation.
