Mark SquillaWHEREAS, Joseph W. Mahoney, Jr. was born in West Philadelphia, the eldest of the three sons of Joseph W. Mahoney Sr. and Edna Mahoney. The family moved to Bala-Cynwyd, and he attended Archbishop Carroll High School and St. Joseph's University. Joe was an administrative specialist with the FBI in Washington, D.C., concentrating on counterintelligence operations; and
WHEREAS, Joe then served eight years on the staff of former U.S. Representative Lawrence Coughlin, the Montgomery County Congressman from the 13th District. He was Rep. Coughlin's campaign manager in the 1982 campaign, and was his representative for constituent outreach and administrative services in Washington; and
WHEREAS, In 1990, Joe joined Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce where he served as Executive Vice President where he oversaw the Chamber's public policy activities at the federal, state and city levels as well as outreach to the county governments in the surrounding counties. He also served on the Board of Visitors for the Haub School of Business at St. Joe's; and
WHEREAS, Whatever the policy issue was, and whether Joe was supportive or opposed a particular issue, Joe treated every person with whom he came into contact with calmness, decency, and a true sense of professionalism; and
WHEREAS, Joe is survived by his mother, Edna, his wife, Patricia McElwee Mahoney, two brothers, Rev. Shawn Mahoney and Dennis and Josephine Mahoney, and six nieces and nephews. He resided in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania; now therefore, be it
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That Council does hereby honor the life and achievements of Joseph W. Mahoney, Jr., a longtime leader of the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce, and a passionate advocate for the business community and for the entire Philadelphia region.
FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to Patricia Mahoney as evidence of the sincere sentiments of this legislative body.
