Full Bill
WHEREAS, Marlene Trice is the founder of the Kitchen of Love Distribution Center which, monthly, provides free nutritious groceries, including fresh meats, vegetables and fruits to more than 500 residents of Philadelphia and for more than three decades, Mrs. Trice has dedicated much of her time to ensure that those in need have access to the precious necessities of life; and
WHEREAS, The AARP Andrus Award was named after AARP founder Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus and the award recognizes outstanding individuals who are making their communities better in ways that are consistent with AARP's mission, vision and commitment to volunteer service and who inspire others to volunteer; and
WHEREAS, Through her work, Mrs. Trice exemplifies the spirit of Dr. Andrus and the AARP mission by her tireless commitment to providing a helping hand to the community by catering countless neighborhood events, grocery shopping for elderly residents (including trips to medical appointments), organizing soup kitchens for the homeless and toy drives for underprivileged children, all while juggling the responsibilities of her job and family; and
WHEREAS, Annually, Mrs. Trice organizes a Thanksgiving Dinner, sponsored by State Representative Cherelle L. Parker, where numerous people from throughout Philadelphia and South Jersey come together to feast over a true homemade meal and she is an active member of Taylor Memorial Church, a Block Captain on Forrest Avenue for over 34 years and the wife of Mr. Clarence Trice for more than 30 years, where their union has blessed her as a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother; and
WHEREAS, AARP's commitment to volunteer service can be traced back to Dr. Andrus' founding vision and motto, To serve, not to be served and according to AARP Pennsylvania State President Jim Palmquist, Marlene's tireless commitment to her community serves as an inspiration to others and makes her a particularly worthy recipient of this award; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That we hereby honor Marlene Trice on receiving the Pennsylvania AARP Andrus Award for Community Service.
FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to Marlene Trice as evidence of the sincere sentiments of this legislative body.
