Recognizing and honoring the Opportunities Industrialization Center, Inc. (OIC) on the occasion of its 50th Anniversary to be celebrated on June 12-15, 2014.

WHEREAS, The Opportunities Industrialization Center, Inc. (OIC) is an education, training and job placement institution founded by the late Reverend Leon H. Sullivan in 1964 in response to the lack of opportunities provided to African Americans in Urban Communities. OIC is dedicated to eliminating poverty, illiteracy and unemployment in Philadelphia to ensure a meaningful quality of life for citizens; and

WHEREAS, Since its startup, the OIC has evolved in to an establishment of over 100 OIC's across the nation and in South Africa, and has served over 3.3 million people through job placement, education, supportive human services and business development; and

WHEREAS, The OIC's largest training program, Opportunities Inn: The Hospitality Training Institute has been in operation for 24 years with the success of its graduates earning a combined 38.3 million in aggregate annual salaries in the City of Philadelphia alone; and

WHEREAS, The OIC currently provides services like the Career and Academic Development Institute and Creative Learning Academy, which is an accelerated alternative high school program that provide academic and transitional services to students that are returning to school to earn their high school diploma from low income and underserved communities; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, The Council of the City of Philadelphia hereby honors the Opportunities Industrialization Center, Inc. for 50 years of supporting unemployed, undereducated and disadvantaged Philadelphians and helping them to further their careers and we extend the sincere respect and admiration of this legislative body.
