Full Bill

WHEREAS, On June 4, 2004, Alexandra (Alex) Scott issued a challenge to the nation encouraging people everywhere to hold lemonade stands in an effort to raise $1 million for the fight against childhood cancer - one cup at a time; and

WHEREAS, In 2005, the Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation was incorporated as a 501(c)3 charity with a two part mission: To raise money and awareness of childhood cancer causes, primarily research into new treatments and cures; and to encourage and empower others, especially children, to raise money for childhood cancer by holding their own Alex's Lemonade Stands; and

WHEREAS, In the ten years since the first Alex's challenge was issued, the Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation has raised over $75 million and funded more than 375 research projects at 94 institutions across the United States; and

WHEREAS, Alex's “Original” Lemonade Stand, which started the nationwide movement in Wynnewood, just outside of Philadelphia, continues to be operated by Alex's friends and family while attracting people from neighboring communities to show their continuing support will return on Saturday, June 7, 2014; and

WHEREAS, Across the United States, there are now thousands of Lemonade Stands operating during National Lemonade Days in the continuous effort to raise funding and awareness of childhood cancer; and

WHEREAS, 2014 will also mark the Fifth Anniversary of the Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation's Childhood Cancer Symposium, held in Philadelphia every year to provide helpful information and resources to families affected by childhood cancer; and

WHEREAS, Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation has diversified beyond the initial fund raising event of lemonade stands to include The Lemon Ball, The Lemon Run, The Lemon Ride,

The Great Chefs Event, and Alex's Million Mile Run. Walk. Ride in September to raise the profile of National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month; and

WHEREAS, Philadelphia is fortunate to have two of the top children's cancer hospitals in the world, Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and St. Christopher's Hospital for Children, who continuously advance the study and treatment of childhood cancer and we are equally fortunate to have Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation headquartered in our area and continuously advocating for the advancement of research and cures for childhood cancer; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, Hereby honors Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation in recognition of the Tenth Anniversary of National Lemonade Days from June 6 - 8, 2014.

RESOLVED FURTHER, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation further evidencing the sincere admiration and respect of this legislative body.
