WHEREAS, American veterans of the Korean War (1950-1953) served honorably throughout the war, fighting courageously and often making the ultimate sacrifice; and
WHEREAS, The United States holds as its highest ideals freedom, democracy, and self-determination; during the Korean War, about 5,720,000 American armed forces fought bravely to preserve and defend these ideals; and
WHEREAS, About 90% of the armed forces from the United States were sent to the Korean War to support the South Korean armed forces and the cause of freedom at the request of President Harry Truman; and
WHEREAS, 33,739 American military were killed, 103,284 were wounded, and more than 7,500 soldiers are missing in action; and
WHEREAS, The Korean War Memorial at Penn's Landing is both a tribute to the 610 Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen from Philadelphia and its surrounding counties who died in combat, and a monument declaring the historical importance of the Korean War; and
WHEREAS, The Friends of the Korean War Memorial at Penn's Landing is an organization founded by and primarily led by veterans of the Korean War in order to honor and advocate on behalf of Korean War veterans in the Philadelphia area; and
WHEREAS, The Friends of the Korean War Memorial at Penn's Landing established the Korean War Memorial in 2002 and diligently maintains it to this day; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That it hereby celebrates, honors, and thanks our Korean War veterans on Veterans Day 2014; and
RESOLVED FURTHER, That an engrossed copy of this Resolution be presented to The Friends of the Korean War Memorial at Penn's Landing symbolically on behalf of all veterans, evidencing the sincere admiration and respect of this legislative body.
