Full Bill
WHEREAS, On November 1, 2014, for the third time in its history and the first time in 23 years, Philadelphia will host the National Wrestling Coaches Association All-Star Classic Wrestling Competition at the University of Pennsylvania's storied gymnasium, The Palestra, which in Greek means: Place of Wrestling; and
WHEREAS, Featured as part of The National Wrestling Coaches Association All-Star Classic Wrestling Competition will be the first-ever NWCA women's wrestling match in Philadelphia, which will be between 2014 World Bronze Medalists Helen Maroulis of the United States, who is ranked third in the World, and Ms. Jillian Gallays of Canada, who is ranked fourth in the World; and
WHEREAS, Since 1994, the number of women who wrestle in high school has grown from 804 to 9,904; and
WHEREAS, Twenty-four colleges now sponsor a women's varsity wrestling program; and
WHEREAS, The Geller-Hoover Memorial Women's Wrestling Tournament—the second oldest such tournament in the Nation—will be relocating to Philadelphia in 2015; and
WHEREAS, Women's wrestling has been a recognized Olympic Sport since 2004; and
WHEREAS, The City Council of Philadelphia urges all Philadelphians to join in support of equal opportunity for girls and women to participate and compete in wrestling—one of the most ancient and demanding sports—on the scholastic, collegiate and amateur levels; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That it hereby welcomes and recognizes 2014 World Bronze Medalists Helen Maroulis of the United States and Ms. Jillian Gallays of Canada on the occasion of their participation in the first-ever National Wrestling Coaches Association Women's Wrestling match in Philadelphia on November 1, 2014.
RESOLVED FURTHER, That Engrossed copies of this resolution be presented one each to the National Wrestling Coaches Association All-Star Classic Women Wrestlers Helen Maroulis and Jillian Gallays.
