Full Bill

WHEREAS, The “Philadelphia Mummers Mardi Gras in Manayunk Parade” will be held on Sunday, February 22,

2015 at Main Street from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. The parade will be one of the biggest family friendly Mardi Gras 2015 celebrations in Philadelphia with the participation of 10,000 active Mummers; and

WHEREAS, Mummers are men and women of all ages who belong to more than 40 organized clubs, often called New Years Associations that make up the 10,000 parade participants. The term “mummer” is German in origin and means to “costume or masquerade”; and

WHEREAS,

Last year's Mummers Mardi Gras was held at the Piazza at Schmidst; however, Main Street in Manayunk offers the perfect setting for an ongoing annual tradition of the

Philadelphia Mummers Mardi Gras Parade

; and

WHEREAS, 2015 Parade-goers will be treated to numerous performances from some of the most prominent string bands parading down the street of Manayunk, giving families the opportunity to enjoy all the pageantry of the Mummers in a fabulous, family-friendly celebration by the iconic Mummers who are known for their unique performances, elaborate costumes, and flavorful choreography; and

WHEREAS, The Manayunk Development Corporation, under the leadership of Jane Lipton, is underwriting the parade costs, guaranteeing that the Mummers receive a financial contribution to the Philadelphia String Band Association which will help offset the costs for bands that participate in the parade; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That it hereby honors and celebrates the first annual Philadelphia Mummers' Mardi Gras Parade in Manayunk.

FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to Tom Loomis and the Philadelphia String Band Association as evidence of the sincere respect and appreciation of this legislative body.
