Full Bill

WHEREAS, The Girard Academic Music Program (GAMP) is a public magnet college preparatory school in South Philadelphia that teaches students a curriculum that integrates both academic and music requirements; and

WHEREAS, Budget cuts have left GAMP, as well as other performing arts schools in the region, with limited resources to fully engage their students; and

WHEREAS, The GRAMMY Signature Schools program was created in 1998 and recognizes the top public high schools in the nation that make an outstanding commitment to music education during an academic school year; and

WHEREAS, More than 20,000 schools were eligible to be selected as a 2015 GRAMMY Signature School. GAMP was one of the thirteen (13) schools in the nation to be chosen; and

WHEREAS, GAMP received the 2015 GRAMMY Signature Schools Enterprise Award which recognizes the efforts made by schools that are economically underserved. The award provides a monetary grant of $5,500; and

WHEREAS, The music industry is a source of great economic growth and opportunity for Philadelphia and the City must continue to recognize its vibrant musical heritage and the incredible talent that is to come; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That it hereby honors and celebrates the Girard Academic Music Program for being selected as a 2015 GRAMMY Signature School by the GRAMMY Foundation which recognizes the best public high schools that make an outstanding commitment to music education.

RESOLVED FURTHER, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to the Girard Academic Music Program further evidencing the sincere admiration and respect of this legislative body.
