Full Bill
WHEREAS, The Lindback Award presented by the Christian R. and Mary F. Lindback Foundation, recognizes educators who demonstrate excellence in promoting learning at the highest levels that improve the intellectual and character development of students; and
WHEREAS, This year’s awardees are Tara Ann Carter from Hill-Freedman World Academy in West Oak Lane; John McGlaughlin from Murrell Dobbins Career and Technical High School in North Philadelphia; and Winnie Kwan from Philadelphia Learning Academy South in West Philadelphia; and
WHEREAS, Tara Ann Carter received her bachelor’s degree from Millersville University and her master’s degree from Villanova University and shortly after graduation began teaching English at Bartram High School. After studying in Japan for two weeks at the Keizai Koho Center, Carter was hired as a founding teacher of Hill-Freedman World Academy, a magnet school that will graduate its first class in 2017; and
WHEREAS, Winnie Kwan a Chinese immigrant and South Philadelphia High School graduate studied engineering at Pennsylvania State University and later went to Drexel to work on her master’s degree. Through a government funded program she began teaching math full time in the Philadelphia School District in 2006. Winnie’s first placement was at William Penn High School in North Philadelphia, followed by Kensington Health and Science, before finally ending up at Philadelphia Learning Academy South; and
WHEREAS, John McGlaughlin decided to use his skills in the business world to go teach math at Murrell Dobbins Career and Technical High School. The son of a Girls High teacher, graduated with a degree in psychology and a masters degree with a focus on organizational development, later worked in business for Rosenbluth International and AT&T. McGlaughlin has been quoted telling his students “Be ready because math isn’t just about arithmetic. It’s about being willing to solve problems. If you can solve the boss’ problem, you’re going to get hired”; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, BY VIRTUE OF THIS CITATION, THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, Hereby recognizes and honors all of the 2016 Lindback Award recipients and congratulates them on this outstanding achievement and extend the sincere respect and admiration of this legislative body.
FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be sent to the 2016 Lindback Award recipients, as evidence of the sincere respect and admiration of this legislative body.
