Honoring and recognizing the Woodward-Houston family for their contributions to Philadelphia and their continued multi-generational displays of leadership, advocacy, and generosity on the 100th Anniversary of the Chestnut Hill Community Centre.

WHEREAS,

Members of the Woodward-Houston family have been distinguished leaders, founders, and sponsors of community organizations in Philadelphia for four generations. For over a century, the Woodward-Houston family has shown their commitment to Philadelphia through their efforts in

facilitating sustainable living and

preserving the City’

s historical buildings; and

WHEREAS, In the late 1800’s, Henry Howard Houston created Wissahickon Heights, an innovative and progressive neighborhood development that incorporated open space into affordable City living. The Woodwards have followed Houston’s legacy and continue to restore and develop buildings in Northwest Philadelphia. This year marks the 100th Anniversary of the Chestnut Hill Community Centre, a building that was donated to the Chestnut Hill Community Association by the Woodward-Houston family; and

WHEREAS, The Woodward-Houston family have dedicated themselves to preserving the natural and historical assets of Philadelphia. The Woodwards have been known for their active role in protecting and invigorating Fairmount Park, Pastorious Park, and Wissahickon Park. Earlier this year, Charles Woodward placed a preservation easement at the Philadelphia Cricket Club that will prevent any commercial development to take place on the 40-acre golf course; and

WHEREAS, The Woodward-Houston family have been committed advocates for the people of Philadelphia. Gertrude Houston was a valued activist for women in the community and was a

founding member of the National League for Women’s Service, an organization that was created to contribute to the war effort in 1917.

George Woodward, during his time in the Pennsylvania Senate, strongly advocated for child protective laws and organized the Child Labor Association of Pennsylvania in 1915. The Woodwards have also consistently shown their support and compassion for low-income and homeless citizens of Philadelphia

; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA,

That it hereby honors and recognizes

the Woodward-Houston family for their contributions to Philadelphia and their continued multi-generational displays of leadership, advocacy, and generosity on the 100th Anniversary of the Chestnut Hill Community Centre.

RESOLVED FURTHER, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to the Woodward-Houston family as evidence of the sincere sentiments of this legislative body.
