WHEREAS, Born in Jacksonville, FL, Samuel Staten, Sr. came to Philadelphia at a young age and was educated in the Philadelphia school system; and
WHEREAS, Samuel Staten, Sr., served as business manager of Laborers’ Local 332 encouraging activism in the labor community
; and
WHEREAS, Having worked 10 years as a construction laborer before becoming a Local 332 Field Representative in 1970, Mr. Staten was appointed Assistant Business Manager in 1973. In August 1978, he was elected the Business Manager, a position he would hold until 2008 after 30 years of dedicated service; and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Staten was an innovator and a tireless advocate for working families
, encouraging activism in the labor community; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Staten sadly departed this world on Tuesday April 26, 2016 at the age of 80.
He had been a union member for more than 50 years
; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, that Wallace Street from Broad Street to 13th Street shall be also named as “Samuel Staten, Sr. Drive” to honor and pay tribute to his work in the City of Philadelphia and beyond.
