Recognizing and Honoring Bria Young, a Philadelphia native, for her hard work and dedication in the field of basketball. We are proud of her many accomplishments, and especially recognize her acceptance into the internationally recognized team, the Harlem Globetrotters.

WHEREAS, Harlem Globetrotters are an exhibition basketball team that combines athleticism, theater and comedy into their performance. They are known for entertaining their audience with exciting tricks and fancy dribbling skills, as well as their community outreach. The Globetrotters are of international renown and have played more than 26,000 exhibition games in 122 countries and territories; and

WHEREAS, Bria Young, a West Philadelphia Native, joined the Harlem Globetrotters at the end of 2016. She joined two other females in a 30 person roster. She is only the 14th female to join the team in 90 years of Globetrotter history; and

WHEREAS, Bria was exposed to basketball at an early age, and was able to hone her skills as part of the New Breed age 10 and under team at the Christy Recreation Center. She was the best player on the team of all boys; and

WHEREAS, Bria continued to play basketball in her middle school and high school years. At Preparatory Charter High School in South Philadelphia, she was a starting point guard and led her team to four Public League Playoffs four years in a row, eventually winning the Public League Championship in her Senior Year; and

WHEREAS, Bria was a Division one recruit and played one season for the St. Francis Ref Flash. She then transferred to Philadelphia University and played for the Lady Rams. At PhilaU, Bria scored more than 1,000 points as a three-year starter point guard for the Rams. Bria’s many accomplishments include: first team all-league, first team all-region, and co-MVP and Defensive Player of the Year for the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference; and

WHEREAS, In addition to her athleticism, Bria excelled academically as well. She completed her Bachelor of Science Degree from Philadelphia University in Psychology and her first year of graduate school majoring in Community and Trauma Counseling. She earned the Markward Club’s Ferguson Award for Academic and Athletic Excellence, she was a member of the National Honor Society and she claimed the Lady Huskie’s Highest GPA award four times; and

WHEREAS, Bria’s dream of becoming a professional basketball player came true when she joined the Globetrotters last year. We are honored to call her a daughter of Philadelphia and wish her and the Globetrotters all the best in their basketball season; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, THAT THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, Hereby recognizes and honors Bria Young, a Philadelphia native, for her hard work and dedication in the field of basketball. We are proud of her many accomplishments, and specially recognize her acceptance into the internationally recognized team, the Harlem Globetrotters.

FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to Bria Young as a sincere expression of the Council of the City of Philadelphia’s gratitude, admiration and recognition.
