Recognizing The Philadelphia Music Alliance for its promotion of the City's unique and outstanding musical legacy, and declaring the Walk of Fame a Philadelphia landmark.

WHEREAS, The Philadelphia Music Alliance was founded in June 1986 as a way to promote Philadelphia’s rich musical history, while simultaneously supporting the City’s current music scene. This joint venture between music executives and devoted citizens is dedicated to preserving Philadelphia’s status as one of the oldest and most distinguished music capitals in the United States; and

WHEREAS, One of the defining features of the Music Alliance is its Walk of Fame, which lies along the Avenue of the Arts, from Walnut Street to Spruce Street. The Walk of Fame contains the names of over 100 Philadelphia area musicians who have had a significant impact on the music scene; and

WHEREAS, Dizzy Gillespie, John Coltrane, Marian Anderson, and Dick Clark were among some of the first inductees into the Walk of Fame in 1987, and contributed to the early significance of the Philadelphia landmark; and

WHEREAS, Following their 2015 Walk of Fame induction, Tariq “Black Thought” Trotter, of the iconic Philadelphia band The Roots, underscored the significance of the Philadelphia Walk of Fame in

Rolling Stone Magazine

by saying, “What better place to be immortalized in that way than on Broad Street, Philadelphia’s main artery. Our equator. Our Mason-Dixon Line, so to speak. It’s from these streets that we came, and now back to these streets we return”; and

WHEREAS, In addition to its efforts to memorialize Philadelphia’s contributions to music history, The Philadelphia Music Alliance is dedicated to the maintenance of music programs in schools and communities, including: musical instrument donations, piano competitions, music education scholarships and grants, and the Philadelphia International Airport Music Project; and

WHEREAS, We on this Council join in wishing the Philadelphia Music Alliance continued success in its endeavors, and express our collective conviction that the Walk of Fame will continue to be a proud symbol of Philadelphia’s rich musical heritage throughout the City; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED BY VIRTUE OF THIS CITATION, THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, Hereby recognizes the outstanding work of The Philadelphia Music Alliance and joins in celebrating its Walk of Fame as a Philadelphia landmark, with the most sincere respect and admiration of this legislative body.

FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be sent to the Philadelphia Music Alliance, as evidence of the sincere respect and admiration of this legislative body.
