Honoring and remembering the late Darren "Dutch" Daulton, catcher for the Philadelphia Phillies, who passed away Sunday, August 6, 2017 at the age of 55 after a four-year battle with brain cancer.

WHEREAS, Darren Daulton, known as one of the most charismatic catchers for the Philadelphia Phillies (the “Phillies”), was drafted by the Phillies organization in 1980 and played 14 seasons for the Phillies; and

WHEREAS, Darren Daulton was a three-time Major League Baseball (“MLB”) All-Star with the Phillies and won the Silver Slugger Award in 1992; and

WHEREAS, In 1993, the Phillies won a National League pennant due in large part to Darren Daulton’s talent throughout the 1993 season; and

WHEREAS, Darren Daulton was at the center of the 1993 Phils popularity attracting a then-franchise record 3.1 million fans to Veterans Stadium; and

WHEREAS, Even though the Phillies did not win the 1993 World Series, Darren Daulton went on to win the 1997 World Series as a member of the Florida Marlins; and

WHEREAS, Pitcher Curt Schilling referred to Darren Daulton as “the best catcher in baseball” and Manager Jim Fregosi considered Mr. Daulton the game’s “best leader”; and

WHEREAS, Darren Daulton was ranked the 25th best catcher in baseball history in the 2001 Historical Baseball Abstract by Bill James and was inducted into the Philadelphia Baseball Wall of Fame on August 6, 2010; and

WHEREAS, Following his retirement, Darren returned to Philadelphia and hosted the radio show “Talking Baseball with Dutch” on Philadelphia sports radio station WPEN; and

WHEREAS, One of Darren Daulton’s most important legacies however, is the Darren Daulton Foundation, created by Darren in 2010, which is an organization devoted to helping others with brain tumors and brain cancer; and

WHEREAS, Darren Daulton has earned the gratitude and admiration of our great City through his remarkable dedication to philanthropy and through his outstanding career with the Phillies and his legacy can’t be celebrated enough as we mourn his loss; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, THAT THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, Hereby honors and remembers the late Darren “Dutch” Daulton, catcher for the Philadelphia Phillies who passed away Sunday, August 6, 2017 at the age of 55 after a four-year battle with brain cancer.
