Full Bill

WHEREAS, The Philadelphia Folksong Society (PFS) was founded in 1957 by a small group of folk artists and enthusiasts. The organization offers programs of presentation, participation, and education throughout Greater Philadelphia and the nation. These programs present a cultural history of society and provide enjoyment to thousands of people of all ages; and

WHEREAS, PFS is dedicated to preserving the past, promoting the present, and securing the future of folk music and related forms of expression through education, presentation, and participation; and

WHEREAS, PFS contributes to the preservation of a vast variety of musical styles and historical perspectives. PFS programs range in scope from a small group of friends singing together, to tens of thousands of patrons gathered for concert presentations. A network of thousands of dedicated volunteers has allowed PFS to execute these programs in an unprecedented way since the organization’s inception 60 years ago; and

WHEREAS, Popular programs hosted by PFS include the Philadelphia Folk Festival, Fall Fling, Spring Thing, Cabin Fever Festival and the Heartwood Festival. Seasonal programming of workshops, community service programs, and concerts serve a diverse range of participants, including members in the community, volunteers, artists, students, partner organizations, and PFS members; and

WHEREAS, PFS has been the recipient of various awards, including the PA Festivals Association Award, Philadelphia Museum Foundation’s Best of Philadelphia Music Award, Pennsylvania Resources Council in Achievement and Special Events Recycling, Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce’s Excellence in Arts Management Award and Philadelphia Music Alliance Institutional Award; Now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That it hereby recognizes and honoring the Philadelphia Folksong Society on their 60th Anniversary of preserving the expression of folk music, and for their recent move to the Roxborough community.

FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to the Philadelphia Folksong Society as further evidence of the sincere admiration and gratitude of this legislative body.
