Full Bill

WHEREAS, founded in 1827 by a group of gentleman farmers, botanists and other plant enthusiasts for the promotion and advancement of Botany, an interesting and highly influential branch of science; and

WHEREAS, The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS) started with the humble beginnings of 80 members has blossomed to a membership which now encompasses over 25,000 strong; and

WHEREAS, With their passion for plants and gardening, community involvement programs, innovation and tradition PHS strives to foster a love and passion for plants and gardening to our entire region, and to create beautiful, healthy and sustainable communities; and

WHEREAS, The PHS Philadelphia Flower Show, the largest and most prestigious indoor flower show in the world, was first held in 1829 at the Masonic Hall on Chestnut Street and now attracts over 250,000 visitors annually to the Pennsylvania Convention Center; and

WHEREAS, The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS) won the Grand Pinnacle Gold Award for best overall event in the world from the International Festivals and Events Association at ceremonies in Tucson, Arizona marking the second time in four years that the Philadelphia Flower Show has received the top prize in the worldwide competition; and

WHEREAS, Along with receiving the top prize at this year’s Pinnacle Awards, PHS also won a record 21 IFEA/Haas & Wilkerson Pinnacle Awards at this year’s competition besting events and festivals from

China, Australia, Ireland, the Netherlands, Mexico, and South Korea to name a few; and

WHEREAS, The Philadelphia Flower Show was chosen by the American Bus Association,

a trade association for motor coach operators and tour companies in the United States and Canada,

as one of the “Best of the Best” events in the nation for group visits and was featured in

Destinations

magazine; and

WHEREAS, The 2018 Philadelphia Flower Show, “Wonders of Water,” will be an extraordinary attraction for tour groups, families, and anyone who enjoys gardening and flowers. RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That we hereby

congratulate and honor the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society and the Philadelphia Flower Show on winning the Grand Pinnacle Gold award for best overall event in the world from the International Festival and Events Association.

FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society as evidence of the sincere sentiments of this legislative body.
