Full Bill

WHEREAS, With incomprehensible malice and cowardice, a lone gunman killed 59 people and wounded over 500 others on October 1, 2017 while shooting into a crowd attending an outdoor country music festival on the Las Vegas Strip. It was the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history; and

WHEREAS, The victims of the shooting had traveled to Las Vegas from across the country, including Philadelphia. They included people from all walks of life, and hundreds of families and communities across the United States are now coping with unfathomable loss; and

WHEREAS, Las Vegas police, first responders, and hospital personnel must be commended for their courage and actions to prevent further loss of life; and

WHEREAS, The Las Vegas community has shown tremendous support and solidarity towards the victims, raising funds for them and their families and waiting hours in lines to donate blood; and

WHEREAS, The tragedy which unfolded in Las Vegas could have just as likely happened in Philadelphia. We stand in solidarity and mourn the loss of life and grieve the evil which visited the Las Vegas community; and

WHEREAS, Many Philadelphians have traveled to Las Vegas for times of celebration and relaxation and are encouraged to continue to do so. Despite this tragedy, Las Vegas will certainly recover and continue to entertain visitors from around the world; and

WHEREAS, What has happened in Las Vegas will stay in the thoughts and prayers of everyone in Philadelphia as we all work towards the prevention of future similar incidents and the peace of our nation; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That we hereby offer the sincere and heartfelt condolences of the people of Philadelphia to the people of Las Vegas, Nevada.

RESOLVED FURTHER, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to the Mayor and Council of the City of Las Vegas, Nevada.
