WHEREAS, D. Herbert Lipson, known as an “out-spoken” and “hard-charging” pioneer of the city magazine format transformed the magazine industry; and

WHEREAS, Since the early 1950s, Lipson began working at

Philadelphia

magazine alongside his father and then-owner of the magazine Arthur Lipson; and

WHEREAS, According to Philly Mag, Lipson became best known to “readers as the author of the opinionated ‘Off the Cuff’ column”; and

WHEREAS, Eventually, Mr. Lipson took over

Philadelphia

magazine and transformed the magazine into an esteemed and successful independent publication; and

WHEREAS, In the 1960s, under Lipson’s leadership,

Philadelphia

magazine became known for its investigative and lifestyle journalism, pioneering the city magazine format that would be replicated in other cities across the country; and

WHEREAS, Following his early success with

Philadelphia,

Lipson purchased

Boston

magazine in 1970 and also launched

Manhattan inc.

as well as briefly owned

Atlanta

magazine; and

WHEREAS, Herb Lipson is survived by his wife, Carol; daughter Sherry Litwer and her husband, Marty; son David and his wife, Susan; daughter Debbie Claremon and her husband, David; sister Joanne Lipson Beck; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild; and

WHEREAS, Herb Lipson has earned the gratitude and admiration of our great City through his remarkable dedication to journalism and the creation of the city magazine format and his legacy can’t be celebrated enough as we mourn his loss; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, THAT THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, Hereby honors and remembers the late D. Herbert Lipson, owner of

Boston

and

Philadelphia

magazines, who passed away Monday, December 25, 2017 at the age of 88 years old.
