Full Bill

WHEREAS, The Lunar New Year is one of the most important festivals in Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Korean, Tibetan, and Mongolian culture; and

WHEREAS, The Lunar New Year is a joyous celebration lasting fifteen days where families come together in jubilation for the year to come; and

WHEREAS, 2019 is the Year of the Pig, which symbolizes both wealth and prosperity in Chinese culture; and

WHEREAS, The celebration of the Lunar New Year is tied to many cultural norms, including wearing red and setting off fireworks, both designed to scare off the monsters that come out during the Lunar New Year celebration; and

WHEREAS, Many celebrations include the traditional “lion dance”, which is performed as a way to drive away evil spirits and provide prosperity heading into the new year; and

WHEREAS, Philadelphia holds many celebrations across the City to honor the Lunar New Year, where hundreds of people come out and celebrate the start to another year; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That we recognize and celebrate the Asian-American Community in Philadelphia on the occasion of the 2019 Lunar New Year.
