Full Bill

WHEREAS, September 7th marks the 197th Anniversary of Brazilian Independence; and

WHEREAS, The City of Philadelphia raises the Brazilian flag to promote awareness of the many contributions of Brazilian-American citizens to the economic development and vitality of the City. Brazilian Day Philadelphia is a day to share the diverse ethnic heritage that makes Brazil unique and rich in cultural pride; and

WHEREAS, Project Capoeira, Inc. and its founder, Adenilson Dos Santos have been the instrumental organizers, promoters, and participants of Brazilian Day Philadelphia. The non-profit’s mission is to foster inter-cultural understanding and a sense of community through art education and social outreach. They devote themselves to preserve, develop, and share the art of Capoeira, a Brazilian art form that combines elements of martial arts, games, music, and dance to the Philadelphia Area; and

WHEREAS, Brazilian Day Philadelphia week-long festivities will culminate with the Brazilian Day Festival at Penn’s Landing. The free event features vendors offering a variety of authentic Brazilian foods, traditional crafts, and talented performers showcasing the rhythms and dances of Brazil including Samba, Forro, Pagode, Capoeira, Samba-Reggae, and more; and

WHEREAS, The organizers, sponsors and supporters of Brazilian Day Philadelphia work to unify the Brazilian Community by showcasing and supporting its talents and local businesses, and promoting a greater understanding, respect, and appreciation for Brazilian culture and community; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That it hereby honors and recognizes the 4th Annual Brazilian Day Flag Raising in Philadelphia as a celebration of Brazilian independence and Brazilian Day.

FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to Project Capoeira, Inc. as evidence of the sincere sentiments of this legislative body.
