Honoring and celebrating the 185 years of reporting by the journalists at the Jes Rau's German Times, a German-American newspaper.

WHEREAS, The New Yorker Staats-Zeitung & Jes Rau’s German Times are some of the oldest German-American newspapers in the United States, dating back more than 185 years. This means that these newspapers began publishing before the American Civil War, and have continually been published sense; and

WHEREAS, The New Yorker Staats-Zeietung & Jes Rau’s German Times is an important paper that maintains German heritage pride in the United States, love for the German language, culture and the German-American clubs and organizations in Philadelphia and other major American cities; and

WHEREAS, The New Yorker Staats-Zeitung & Jes Rau’s German Times is mostly written in German, and covers Local, National and International events in order to keep German-American’s abreast of events around the world. They also cover remarkable selection of cultural reporting, novels, memoirs from German Americans, opinions, entertainment and sport.; and

WHEREAS, The New Yorker Staats-Zeitung & Jes Rau’s German Times is written and published by Publisher & Editor Jes Rau, General Manager Margita Baldeweg, volunteer’s Otto Leukert and Sieglinde Jakymiw of Philadelphia, and the many other volunteers in the German-American community; and

WHEREAS, The devotion of free time by these volunteers speak volumes to the pride of the German-American community of Philadelphia and other major American cities, and how they give back to their community; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That we hereby honor and recognize Jes Rau’s German Times for its 185 years of reporting, and all of the devoted staff members and volunteers that keep the newspaper thriving.
