Full Bill

WHEREAS, ADHD Awareness Month is celebrated nationally in October; and

WHEREAS, Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (“ADHD”) is a neurodevelopmental disorder affecting 11 percent of school-aged children. Symptoms continue into adulthood in more than three-quarters of cases. ADHD is characterized by developmentally inappropriate levels of inattention, impulsivity and hyperactivity; and

WHEREAS, ADHD is medically and legally recognized as a treatable yet potentially serious disorder; and

WHEREAS, Children with ADHD often experience delays in independent functioning, and many may also have mild delays in language, motor skills or social development that are not part of ADHD but often co-occur; and

WHEREAS, Children and Adults with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (“CHADD”) was founded in 1987, in response to the frustration and sense of isolation experienced by parents and their children with ADHD; and

WHEREAS, In 2018, a group of local families founded Philadelphia CHADD, to provide support for families and their children with ADHD, and last year was the Chapter’s first programming year; and

WHEREAS, Chester County/Mainline CHADD and BuxMont CHADD had previously served Philadelphia families in the absence of a local Philadelphia Chapter; and

WHEREAS, CHADD National chose to hold its 2019 Conference in Philadelphia after the establishment of Philadelphia CHADD; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That we hereby proclaim November 7, 2019, the first day of the National Conference on ADHD, as ADHD Awareness Day in the City of Philadelphia, and we honor the work of CHADD and its local affiliate Philadelphia CHADD in providing families with tools, knowledge and support to help raise children with ADHD.

FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to representatives of CHADD and its local affiliate Philadelphia CHADD.
