WHEREAS, Saboor Muhammad was born on April 15, 1955 in North Philadelphia. He attended Philadelphia public schools, and was a proud graduate of John Bartram High School; and
WHEREAS, Saboor spent the majority of his life in Southwest Philadelphia. As the co-founder of both Southwest Philadelphia District Services and the Philadelphia Community Classroom, Saboor’s vision was to create a better environment and improve the quality of life for his neighbors and the Southwest Philadelphia community at large. His work included efforts to create jobs, reduce homelessness, reform former felons, mentor youth, fight drug addiction, and prevent food insecurity. Saboor was known for his steadfast advocacy for equitable communities, and for being unafraid to ask the hard questions of people in power; and
WHEREAS, In addition to being a community leader, Saboor was a steadfast public servant who served as an aide in the office of Councilmember Jannie Blackwell for many years, and became well known and beloved by residents all over Philadelphia’s 3rd District; and
WHEREAS, With his gift in mathematics, Saboor was known in his community as an excellent tutor. He co-owned a tutoring company called Action Reading and Math, and he also spent countless hours tutoring students at the Community College of Philadelphia; and
WHEREAS, Saboor leaves behind to continue his legacy his siblings Helene Taylor-Elam and Cheryl Taylor, his son Yusef, his daughters Sabriyyah and Yasmin, and his grandchildren Yair, Saniyyah, Nazir, Xayla, and Jahlil, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and family. He will forever be remembered for how much he cared for the welfare of Southwest Philadelphia, and for his creativity in making the neighborhood a safer and more equitable place to live; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That it hereby celebrates the life and honors the memory of Saboor Muhammad.
FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Saboor Muhammad, further evidencing the sincere admiration and respect of this legislative body.
