Full Bill

WHEREAS, The Oak Lane Youth Association is an organization located in the West Oak Lane section of Philadelphia and its mission is to establish and maintain a well-organized program of intellectual and athletic experiences that stress the qualities of participation, competition, sportsmanship, and pride and to facilitate a basic understanding between parents, youth, and coaches, resulting in community solidarity through mutual involvement; and

WHEREAS, The Oak Lane Youth Association is an organization dedicated to the preservation of community growth and harmony and to youth development in a positive and creative environment. The organization started around a single football team and cheerleading squad in August of 1971; and

WHEREAS, From humble beginnings, the Oak Lane Youth Association has grown to 21 teams and nearly 400 youths. Its activities include track, baseball, softball, football, cheerleading, basketball, and tutoring. In addition, the organization sponsors trips and outings. The Oak Lane Youth Association has realized many of its goals through its year-round athletic programs and intellectual endeavors involving community adults as well as young people; and

WHEREAS, The Oak Lane Youth Association has a vested interest in the growth and development of each and every member of its programs, and through its programs, helps to prevent inner city youth from engaging in negative behavior and is an effective alternative to drugs, violence, and crime. The organization gives youth the opportunity to participate in an organized and productive experience that promotes healthy lifestyles, prevents childhood obesity, and prevents health-related illnesses in the future; and

WHEREAS, It is the desire of the Oak Lane Youth Association to reach community members through its programs. The Oak Lane Youth Association will continue to strive to meet the needs of the community by providing an effective and expanding program for its youth; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That it hereby honors the Oak Lane Youth Association on the special occasion of its 50th Anniversary.

FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to the Oak Lane Youth Association as evidence of the sincere respect and admiration of this legislative body.
