WHEREAS, The choices Philadelphia makes about how the treatment of road surfaces before, during, and after winter storms/freezing events have implications for road safety and maintenance, our budget, our water quality and the environment and thus should be carefully considered; and
WHEREAS, In the event of a predicted three inches of snow Philadelphia deploys 1,500 to 2,000 tons of road salt on streets across the city, and much of this salt ends up in local streets, creeks and rivers, making some of them saltier than the ocean; and
WHEREAS, The United States accounts for approximately one third of all road salt use in the world; and
WHEREAS, Philadelphia must balance the competing needs for environmental health, road safety and the appropriate use of city resources and tax payer dollars; now, therefore, bet it
RESOLVED, The Committee on Streets and Services hold hearings on Beets, Brine and Salt regarding the recipe for Philadelphia’s Streets in Winter in order to advance our interests in safe roads, healthy streams and good stewardship of resources and the taxpayers funds.
